Thank you to everyone who made JJI’s annual fundraiser, Another Chance/An Equal Chance, a success! We had over 120 people joining us. It was a fun evening in a beautiful space and we got to honor two champions of children’s rights: Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Jenner and Block partner Jeffrey D. Colman. Congratulations again to our honorees!
Both Honorees gave impassioned speeches, urging reforms and defense of the children caught in our prisons and our adult criminal courts. Honoree Toni Preckwinkle emphasized how critical it is to end the racially disparate practice of “automatically” prosecuting children under the age of 18 in the adult court. The importance of these reforms was highlighted by the moving account Xavier McElrath Bey shared of being a teenager caught in the adult criminal system.
We are grateful to all of our supporters, to Jenner and Block for their sponsorship and space for the event, and to the many reformers who filled the room with their compassion, commitment and vision for a better world for children in conflict with the law.
The money raised at the event will help support JJI’s advocacy efforts to improve the juvenile justice system in Illinois including working towards eliminating the automatic transfer of children to adult court.
