Great News!

Detention Reform: HB2567 HCA1 – a bill providing that a child under the age of 13 cannot be detained in a detention center unless a local youth service provider has been contacted and has not been able to accept the child – passed both the House and Senate. The bill goes directly to Governor Bruce Rauner. Read JJI’s letter to Governor Rauner here.

Parole & Sentencing Reform: SB1560 SA1 – a bill that prohibits the commitment of youth to Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (juvenile prison) for misdemeanor and status offenses limits the time of confinement in IDJJ not to exceed the time an adult could be imprisoned for the same offense, and limits the length of parole – passed both Senate and House. The bill goes to Gov. Rauner.
